ABOUT THE CONTENT

DENTAL MATERIAL

Dental material deals with the study of dental materials used in dental field. As a dentist, we come across various materials that we commonly use in providing treatment to a patient. It is imperative to know about the physical as well as chemical properties of these materials so as to render quality care to a patient. As a dental graduate, my recommended books for studying dental materials would be:

John J Manapallil – Basic Dental Materials
I read this book during my basic science phases and found it to be comprehensive and quite easy to understand. The book is equipped with texts given in the form of points that are easy to remember for board exams. Also, many pictures make the text clear and easy to memorize.

Phillips – Dental Material
In addition to Manappallil, which is an Indian based simple textbook, I also referred to Phillip's Science of Dental Materials which was originally authored by Anusavice. Philipps being an international based book, has elaborated information which is useful specially for competitive exams held abroad, in addition to board exams. It provides comprehensive and uptodate information on materials used in cosmetic and restorative dentistry.
  1. Craig’s – Restorative Dental material – 11th Edition
  2. Craig’s Restorative Dental Material 13th Ed
  3. John J Manapallil – Basic Dental Materials – 4th Edition
  4. Mahalaxmi – Materials used in Dentistry
  5. Mannapallil – Basic Dental Materials ( 3rd Edition)
  6. McCabe & Walls – Applied Dental Materials 9th Ed.
  7. Phillips – Dental Material
  8. Shama bhat, Nandish – Science of Dental Materials -2nd Edition

GENERAL PATHOLOGY

Pathology is the study of various histopathological changes that occur in human body tissues during a disease process. It aids in diagnosis similar to what radiology does but uses actual human tissues and with the aid of a microscope. I would personally suggest you these books:

Harsh Mohan – Textbook of Pathology:

Pathology can be a difficult and cumbersome subject to study of you don't choose right study material, at the right time. I had read Harshmohan's Textbook of pathology, which provided me a clear insight about various topics needed for a dental student. The best part about the book was that even the histological diagrams are illustrated in a simple manner. Also the texts are easy and simple to understand.

Robbin’s & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease:

This book is considered to be a standard textbook for studying basics of pathology. Some students might find it a bit difficult at the beginning, but it offers a comprehensive knowledge and is a legit pathology guide. This book differs from Robbin's basic pathology in that this has two separate volumes.

  1. Atlas of Head and Neck Pathology 2nd Ed
  2. Harsh Mohan – Textbook of Pathology- 6th edition
  3. Harsh Mohan, Sugandha Mohan – Essential Pathology for Dental Students – 5th Ed
  4. Harsh mohan, Sugandha mohan – Essential Pathology for Dental Students – 4th Edition
  5. Ramdas Nayak- Exam Preparatory Manual for Undergraduate; Pathology-2nd edition
  6. Robbin’s & Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease9E
  7. Robbin’s Basic Pathology, 9E

MICROBIOLOGY

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms and their relations to disease that commonly affects human beings. It also helps the clinician to actually how various microorganisms are responsible in causing human diseases.  For example: how Streptococcus mutans, which is a common bacteria present in human saliva, is responsible for causing dental caries. I would recommend you these books:

Ananthanarayan & Paniker’s Textbook of Microbiology

It is most widely accepted textbook for microbiology for a fact that it is simple, comprehending. The book contains minimal information but is quite adequate for a medical student. However, it might not suffice the Masters program (PG).

PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology is the study of drugs and its interaction with human body. A dentist has to understand how a human body responds to a drug given to treat a disease and subsequently, what a drug does to human body. There are certain drugs which might precipitate an allergic reaction to body in addition to many more possible harmful reactions; which is why, knowing about various drugs used commonly in dental practice is necessary.

K D Tripathi – Essentials of Medical Pharmacology

Pharmacology is incomplete without KD Tripathi. The general concepts might not be easily understood by a newly admitted medical student, for which I'd suggest studying Katzung Pharmacology. Rest chapters are well illustrated in KD Tripathi itself. It contains all the necessary chapters with adequate information for any medical exam.

  1. Charles R. Craig, Robert E. Stitzel – Modern Pharmacology With Clinical Applications
  2. Golan, Tasjian, Armstron – Principles of Pharmacology- The Pathophysiologic Basis of Drug Therapy
